Get to Know the Nissan Qashqai
Although the Nissan Qashqai has been available in other parts of the world since 2006, it did not launch here in Canada until the 2017 model year. The Qashqai is a subcompact crossover SUV that provides a fantastic option for a wide range of drivers. This is not the smallest model in the Nissan lineup––that would be the sporty little Kicks––but it is a fantastic option if you want something on the smaller side. Its impressive engineering and design make the Qashqai a lot of fun to drive, so you do not have to sacrifice a good time behind the wheel just because a smaller vehicle best meets your needs.
If you need something larger, you have plenty of other options available from Nissan, but the Qashqai is a terrific choice for many drivers. You get two rows of seating for up to five people, and it has been offered with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive since it was first introduced. One thing to note when looking at different used models is that a manual transmission has been offered for most years of the Qashqai, alongside the Xtronic automatic transmission that now comes standard. If a manual is something you are interested in, then a used Qashqai is a great choice because the manual transmission was discontinued for the 2022 model year.
Since the Qashqai has only been around since 2017, you will find many of the latest features and options in used models. There is nothing wrong with a great Nissan model from a decade ago––they tend to last a very long time when properly maintained––but it is great to find inexpensive used cars with modern features. Nissan has offered only a single engine in the Qashqai, so you do not have to worry about looking for a specific model or engine option. Any used Qashqai model you choose is going to be fun to drive and give you sporty performance for getting around town or going on a road trip.
The Qashqai: Highly Efficient and Safe on the Road
One of our favourite things about the Nissan Qashqai is that it is incredibly fuel-efficient thanks to its combination of a large gas tank and excellent fuel economy. Despite its small size, this Nissan SUV has a 55L gas tank, letting you fill up with plenty of fuel in a single stop. While there are plenty of other good subcompact crossover models out there, they often have small gas tanks that leave a lot to be desired. This can seem like a minor detail when you are shopping for your next vehicle, but all of those extra stops for gas can really add up when you live with a car for many years.
Not only is the tank in the Qashqai quite large, but it has also been designed and engineered to deliver fantastic fuel economy. It is worth noting that the efficiency you get will depend on several factors, which can change from one model year to the next. In particular, models with a manual transmission or all-wheel drive will be less efficient than those with the Xtronic transmission or front-wheel drive. Looking at the 2017 Qashqai, for example, models with the manual transmission get an estimated 10.0 L/100 km in the city and 8.1 L/100 km on the highway. By comparison, a 2022 model with the automatic transmission and front-wheel drive gets an estimated 8.6 L/100 km in the city and 7.3 L/100 km on the highway.
Best of all, while you are enjoying yourself without stopping for gas very often, the Nissan Qashqai will also help protect you with a wide range of advanced safety features. Impressive technologies such as Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Rear Automatic Braking, and Intelligent Lane Intervention are all part of the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of driver-assist features. It is important to note that this was an optional package when the Qashqai was first released, so some older models might not have all of this technology. The Safety Shield 360 package became standard on every Qashqai starting with the 2020 model year, so you will find it on all Qashqai vehicles since then.
