Although the Nissan Motor Company goes back to the 1930s, its history and legacy of impressive vehicles date to even earlier. In many ways, you could trace its origin to 1914 and the production of the original DAT car, which would lead to the creation of Datsun cars and trucks. A Japanese holding company called Nihon Sangyo was founded in 1928, and in the 1930s, its name was shortened to "Nissan" for use on the Tokyo Stock Exchange––the Nissan Motor Company was officially born in 1934 and has been a leader in the industry ever since.
Throughout the decades that followed, the Nissan name was used primarily in Japan as the brand began to introduce "Datsun" models across the globe. In 1965 Nissan Automobile Canada established its headquarters in Vancouver, and Datsun dealerships started opening across the country. Following the Oil Crisis of the 1970s, there was a growing desire for reliable vehicles that delivered impressive fuel efficiency, and Datsun models were perfectly positioned to deliver on this. In the early 1980s, the headquarters for Nissan Automobile Canada moved to Ontario, and the brand stopped using the Datsun name, switching to "Nissan" outside of Japan.
Nissan's popularity has continued to grow throughout the decades that followed with the introduction of amazing vehicles such as the Nissan Pathfinder and the Rogue. In 2014, Nissan sold more than 100,000 vehicles here in Canada for the first time, and its popularity has continued to boom, with nearly 150,000 Nissan models sold across the country in 2018.
