The Nissan Legacy
Although Nissan first started in Japan in the 1930s, its vehicles have only been available here in Canada since the 1960s––though they weren't sold under that name at the time. For many decades, Nissan vehicles were sold as “Nissan” in Japan but exported under the name “Datsun” to other countries, including Canada. In the early 1960s, there were a handful of dealerships offering these Datsun models, but they were quite few and far between. That all changed in 1965 when Nissan Automobile Canada opened its headquarters in Vancouver, and Datsun dealerships began to pop up all throughout the country.
Within a year of Nissan Automobile Canada getting started, more than 80 dealerships throughout Canada were selling Datsun models. By 1971, Datsun was the top-selling import brand here in Canada. Early models like the Datsun 510, which arrived here in 1968, were very well received, and it was often called the “poor man’s BMW” for offering impressive sophistication, luxury, and performance at a very reasonable price. One thing that helped push Datsun's popularity to the next level was the gas crisis of the 1970s; Datsun models were extremely fuel-efficient, and their sales soared throughout the decade.
In the early 1980s, the headquarters for Nissan Automobile Canada moved from B.C. to Ontario and around that same time, they dropped the “Datsun” name and switched to Nissan here and throughout much of the world. Today, Nissan remains incredibly popular: over 130,000 Nissan vehicles were sold here in Canada in 2019, accounting for the sixth-highest total Nissan sales worldwide. With fantastic cars like the Nissan Altima, stylish SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai, and the rugged Nissan Frontier pickup, it is no surprise that Nissan remains so popular.
